ABSTRACT |
Introduction: Bruxism has been considered as the parafunctional activity that most damages the stomatognathic system. Etiologically, it is considered to be multifactorial and may be related to genetic and systemic factors, as well as anxiety and stress. Clinically, it presents abnormal tooth wear, headache, fatigue of the masticatory muscles, loss of vertical dimension, in addition to dental fractures. Your treatment must be multidisciplinary and individualized. In children, it has a prevalence that varies between 6.5% and 40.6%, affecting the quality of life of children. Objective: This study aims to review the available literature on the subject and describe the clinical aspects of bruxism in childhood, etiology and forms of treatment and also relate the psychological influence on it. Materials and methods: For this research, searches were performed from February to September 2021. Studies were selected in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Embase and Academic Google databases. The Boolean AND marker was used as a search strategy. Results: Among the selected studies there is an agreement when referring to the etiology of bruxism, when it is said that it presents itself as multifactorial. It is worth emphasizing the importance of an early diagnosis as well as a multidisciplinary and individualized treatment. Final considerations: The selected studies found a relationship between childhood bruxism and psychological disorders such as anxiety and stress. |
