ABSTRACT |
Introduction: Submandibular sialolithiasis is characterized as mineralized stones that lodge in the region of Wharton's duct or properly inside the gland that can obstruct the salivary flow. The main symptoms are pain during meals and gland swelling. Correct diagnosis through imaging and clinical examinations is essential, and its treatment varies from a conservative manner to complete excision of the gland. Objective: This study aimed to review the existing literature on the pathological characteristics of the submandibular gland, in order to analyze the scientific evidence related to the forms of treatment, mainly considering treatments with higher success rates. Materials and method: a literature search was carried out through studies found in the electronic databases PubMed and Scielo, where articles in English and Portuguese were selected, taking into account the content that addressed the pathological characteristics and forms of treatment with the highest rate of success. Results: Forty-eight articles understood the criteria to integrate this review. The vast majority found that treatment through sialendoscopy is the method with the highest success rate. Furthermore, it was found that sialolithiasis is correlated with pathophysiological changes in the body, through its direct correlation with osteoporosis and the change in the blood count after its removal. Conclusion: It is concluded that sialendoscopy is considered the gold standard for the treatment of the pathology, and that more studies are needed to prove the correlation with pathophysiological changes in the body. |
