ABSTRACT |
A 7-year-old, 43kg Rottweiler canine patient presenting with recurrent vomiting immediately after ingesting food and water was seen. He was receiving symptomatic treatment prescribed by another veterinarian after ultrasound and laboratory tests showed no alterations. The tutor reported that the other professional had suspected an esophageal tumor. During the physical examination, he was found to be thin and listless. He was dehydrated. From the characteristics described by the tutor, it was concluded that the patient was not vomiting, but was regurgitating. The patient was hospitalized to recover from the dehydration. A cervico-thoracic X-ray was taken and showed a displaced trachea, suggesting megaesophagus (Figs 1 and 2). Treatment during hospitalization was pantoprazole, metoclopramide and fluid therapy to correct dehydration. After discharge, pantoprazole was maintained and conservative dietary treatment was recommended, which consisted of feeding in an elevated position at an angle of 45 to 90º to the ground, remaining elevated for 10 to 15 minutes. It was recommended to introduce a more pasty diet, and to offer several small portions during the day. |
