THE IMPORTANCE OF ADDRESSING ANIMAL WELFARE IN SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT |
According to the Terrestrial Code of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE, currently called the World Organization for Animal Health - WOAH), the Term Animal Welfare (BEA) is related to the physical and mental states of animals during their life and death processes, that they must be free from any unnecessary suffering. Likewise, all animals must enjoy the five freedoms, which are: freedom from thirst and hunger; free from discomfort; free from pain, illness and injuries; free from fear and stress; and free to express their natural behavior. Domestic animals have accompanied society in its development since the beginning, in addition to being considered sentient beings (those who have the ability to consciously feel positive feelings, such as happiness, and negative ones, such as anguish), the coexistence between animals and humans and reality in the homes of thousands of Brazilians, who unfortunately do not offer the necessary respect, care and love, exposing them to neglect, mistreatment, abandonment and abuse, even with existing policies and legislation focused on the issue. In this way, approaching the theme “animal welfare” in schools appears as an alternative to the situation, and can serve as a diagnosis of the way in which humanity relates to animals. Thus, through teaching, students of different age groups and social classes can be instructed on how to properly care for animals and the measures that need to be taken if they witness cases of abuse, aiming for a more conscious and responsible future society. |
